Actos® is a diabetes medication that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1999. Actos was marketed to patients and doctors as a way to help people with Type 2 Diabetes manage their blood sugar levels.

However, studies have shown that pioglitazone, the active ingredient in Actos, is linked to several serious and potentially deadly medical conditions.

Actos Use Linked to Deadly Medical Conditions

In 2011, the FDA concluded that using the drug Actos for a period of 24 months or longer correlated to roughly a 40% increase in a patient’s risk of developing bladder cancer.

The FDA strongly recommends that patients alert their doctor immediately if they experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Blood or red color in urine
  • Urgent need to urinate or pain while urinating
  • Pain in back or lower abdomen.

The FDA also warned patients that pioglitazone can cause several other dangerous side effects, such as:

  • Increased risk of congestive heart failure
  • Eye disease and eye swelling also known as Macular Edema
  • Increased risk of bone fractures in female patients
  • Liver and kidney disease and failure

Despite these serious health concerns, Actos was never recalled in the United States. Medications containing pioglitazone, including Actoplus Met and Duetact, are still being sold to U.S consumers even after they were recalled in other major markets such as Germany and France.

You May Be Entitled to Compensation

In 2014, the pharmaceutical companies that manufacture and sell Actos were ordered to pay over $9 billion in punitive damages. The jury in this case found that Takeda Pharmaceuticals and their partner Eli Lilly & Co. did not disclose the serious safety risks associated with Actos. At the time, this was believed to be the seventh-largest jury verdict ever awarded in U.S history.

Takeda Pharmaceuticals made billions of dollars in profits from sales of Actos. By hiding the serious health risks associated with their product, they put corporate profits over the safety of their customers.
