Steps to Follow After Discovering Nursing Home Abuse

  • Seek Medical Attention
Take your loved one to a hospital or alternative care facility to be examined as soon as possible. If the nursing staff doesn’t allow you to remove your family member from the facility, contact a North Carolina nursing home abuse attorney at Henson Fuerst immediately.
  • Document the Abuse
As soon as you discover your loved one is suffering from abuse or neglect, take pictures of the injuries and room conditions, and write down any witness statements from staff or other residents.
  • Relocate Your Loved One
Whenever possible, try and move your loved one to another facility. Choosing another facility may take time, so make sure you have documented and reported the abuse as soon as possible.
  • Report the Abuse
If your loved one or other nursing home residents exhibit any signs and symptoms of abuse, report the abuse as soon as possible to government authorities.
  • Contact Henson Fuerst

Meet our Nursing Home Attorneys

Carma-Henson-AttorneyCarma Henson
Attorney and partner

Carma Henson, attorney and partner with Henson Fuerst, earned her Juris Doctor from University of North Carolina School of Law in 1999. Born and raised in Garner, North Carolina, Carma has spent her entire career fighting for the rights of individuals who have been hurt, abused, or neglected through no fault of their own, representing nursing home residents who were physically abused and neglected.

Her passion for ensuring justice for these folks was naturally acquired. Carma was raised in a modest home where she was taught to always work hard and stand up for what is right, for what she believed in. She passionately believes that all people, no matter their age, race or religion,  deserve to be treated fairly, with dignity and respect, at all phases and stages of life. At the end of the day, that is what is important to Carma, and what she strives to teach her children—to work hard, be caring, compassion, honest, to treat people with respect, and to never back down from what you know is right.

Rachel Fuerst
Attorney and partner

Rachel Fuerst, the youngest daughter of Robert L. Fuerst, was born and raised in Rocky Mount, North Carolina and earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law. Her passion for justice and practice has been shaped in large part by her close relationship with her grandfather, Dr. Herbert Fuerst, and her concern for the rights and needs of elders and those who live with disabilities related to old age.

She continues to work with families of individuals living with disabilities, including dementia and other brain injuries. Rachel became involved in Disability Rights NC, North Carolina’s federally mandated non-profit organization charged with protecting the rights of children and adults living with disabilities in North Carolina. Attorney Fuerst is passionate about making sure her clients have the opportunity to be heard and to receive a fair chance to live the lives they choose.
