NC 42 Widening (Johnston County)

Project #R-3410
Type: Road Widening
Affected County: Johnston

The NC DOT is proposing a $66.2 million dollar widening project for NC 42 between NC 50 and US 70 Business in Clayton that will widen the existing two-lane highway into a four-lane divided roadway. This project will include the replacement of three bridges over Swift Creek, Little Creek and White Oak Creek. NC DOT officials held a public meeting in May 2018, and will be working to determine the final design after that time. Acquisition is currently set for 2021, with construction starting in 2022. We expect that this project may be accelerated and urge affected land owners to closely monitor this project.

These road improvements are necessary according to the DOT due to substantial increases in peak volume and congestion. The DOT reports that the corridor has a peak of 22,000 vehicles each day, with a forecast of an average of 35,000 vehicles on the roadway by 2040 – a 63 percent increase – on either side of I-40. Affected residents have expressed concern for the widening project at recent public meetings.
