If you buy store brand children’s cough medicine at CVS, Rite-Aid, Dollar General, Kroger, Giant, or Stop & Shop stores, you need to know that there has been a recall of two flavors of children’s cough medicine.
According to a report on Consumerist.com, the problem is that the dosing cup included with the product has been marked wrong, which could lead to an overdose of medicine. An overdose could cause hyper-excitability, nausea, vomiting, seizures, rapid eye movements, hallucinations, stupor, coma, and even death. While there have been no reports of overdose so far, parents and caregivers are asked to check the labels of any liquid cough medicines in the home to make sure they aren’t included in the recall.
The recall affects store brands of grape and cherry liquid cough medicine for children, with the main ingredient of guaifenesin. The recalled medication can be identified with these lot numbers and expiration dates:
