Viagra® Skin Cancer

Viagra is an extremely popular prescription medication used by millions of older men to treat symptoms of erectile dysfunction. Doctors issued more than 8 million Viagra prescriptions in 2012 alone, generating nearly $2 billion in sales for manufacturer Pfizer.

New evidence has found a strong link between sildenafil, the active ingredient in both Viagra and the hypertension drug Reviato, and an increased risk of developing an extremely deadly and aggressive form of skin cancer.

If you or a loved one took either Viagra or Reviato and developed melanoma skin cancer, you may be entitled to compensation. Call Henson Fuerst right away for help with your Drug Injury case.

Link Found Between Viagra and Melanoma

A 2014 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) points to a strong link between the use of sildenafil, better known by its packaged names Viagra and Reviato, and the development of melanoma skin cancer.

This study examined sildenafil use in over 26,000 men. Overall, the study found that men that took sildenafil for an extended period of time were 84% more likely to develop melanoma compared to men that did not take the drug. Even among men that had only taken the pill once in their lives, this study found that their risk of developing melanoma nearly doubled.

Pfizer marketed Viagra to doctors and patients as a safe and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction, making it one of the most widely used prescription medications in the United States in the process. Now, millions of men may be at risk of developing a dangerous and extremely aggressive form of skin cancer through no fault of their own.

Melanoma is Often Deadly

Melanoma skin cancer develops in skin cells called melanocytes. Melanocytes produce melanin, the brown pigment that can protect deeper layers of skin from the harmful rays of the sun. When melanocyte cells begin to divide and grow out of control, it can result in the development of a cancerous melanoma.

Melanoma accounts for a majority of skin cancer deaths worldwide. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2016, more than 76,000 people will be diagnosed with new cases of melanoma, and more than 10,000 will die.

The 2014 study published by the JAMA found that sildenafil use promotes the invasiveness of cancerous melanoma cells.
