Bicycle Safety is a Top Priority This Spring!

Springtime is here and with temperature’s starting to rise we begin to see more people ditching their cars and hitting the pavement. This means more pedestrians and bikers sharing the road with motor vehicles. It is our responsibility to be aware of our surroundings at all times.

Unfortunately, we are reminded everyday how dangerous distracted driving is. Whether you are operating a motor vehicle, riding your bike, or enjoying a nice afternoon walk, one should always be cautious of their surroundings.

According to the News & Observe, a 55-year-old bicyclist was recently hit by a N.C. State police officer when the bicyclist rode through a red light. The officer was going an estimated 23 mph in a marked vehicle. The bicyclist, a Florida resident, was killed from the impact of accident.

Our sincere condolences go out to the families involved. This is a reminder of how crucial it is to always be alert when operating any type of vehicle and when riding a bicycle. An accident can happen at any moment, at Henson Fuerst we want to remind everyone to ride safely this Spring with these tips:

  • Always wear a helmet
  • Stay visible – if drivers can see you they are less likely to hit you
  • Look, Signal and Look again – Let drivers and other bicyclist know where you are going by using hand signals to alert them
  • Stay Alert – keep a lookout for cross walks, bike lanes, lights, and any obstacles that might present themselves
  • Go with the flow– always bike in the direction of traffic never away
  • Act like a car – never weave in and out of lanes, abide by basic traffic rules, be aware of traffic lights and signs, and be aware of the traffic around you
  • Don’t get distracted – leave you electronics behind
  • Assure bicycle readiness – make sure you bike is properly adjusted
  • Follow The Rules of Street Signs and Stop Lights – If you are on your bike at a stop sign, stop. If you are on your bike @ a traffic light turning red, stop. Be mindful that drivers of vehicles have much more power than you do on your bike, or on foot, so be aware, and don’t assume everyone sees you.

Whether you are strapping on a helmet or a seat belt remember to always be cautious of your surroundings, never text and drive, and check twice for cars, bicyclists, or pedestrians.
