Police in Raleigh are currently investigating a motorcycle crash that left one person dead. An article on the open investigation is available here.
About the Accident
The accident took place in the 6100 block of Glenwood Avenue near Hollyridge Drive in Raleigh. Witnesses say the victim was traveling at a high speed and was performing a wheel stand when his motorcycle contacted another vehicle and then veered off the road and into a tree. Emergency personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene.
About the Investigation
According to police, the driver operating the other vehicle was not injured in the collision. A later news report identified the victim as a 29-year-old former soldier once stationed at Fort Bragg. The Raleigh Police Department issued a report stating the victim was speeding when he performed a wheelie and sideswiped another vehicle. The crash remains under investigation.
Eyewitness Accounts Differ
One Rougemont resident offers a version of events which conflicts with the official report—and states the victim was behaving responsibly. According to this account, the car involved cut across several lanes of traffic—blocking the motorcycle’s path and leaving the victim with no time to react before the impact.
Another witness reinforces that the victim was speeding and on his rear wheel at the time of the crash. Calls made to 911 from both witnesses have not yet been released. One of the deceased’s co-workers claims it would be impossible for the victim to enter the flow of traffic where he did, cross three lanes of traffic, and gain the engine speed required to perform a wheelie before impact.
