GM To Recall 1.4 Million Vehicles Due To Fuel-Fed Fires Caused By Oil Leak

One of the largest vehicle manufacturers in the United States, General Motors (GM), has announced it will be recalling an estimated 1.4 million vehicles due to oil leaks that have been known to ignite fuel-fed fires in the affected cars. Reports indicate this is the third such recall that has been initiated by the company in the last seven years.

Reports of the fires began to surface in 2007. Investigators discovered that a valve cover gasket can break apart over time, allowing oil to leak. The oil then drips onto an exhaust manifold, where it catches fires. Flames are then capable of spreading to other areas of the vehicle.

The fires were responsible for at least 19 injuries and damage to several properties, prompting officials to recall a total of 200,000 vehicles in 2008. A similar recall of 1.5 million vehicles followed the next year, and now warnings have been issued that another 1.4 million vehicles need to be repaired.

The makes and models that are affected by the most recent recall include:

  • 1997-2004 Pontiac Grand Prix and Buick Regal
  • 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala
  • 1998 and 1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue
  • 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Recalls like this leave many North Carolinians wondering what they can do to make sure their car is functioning properly. Our legal staff at HensonFuerst suggests car and truck owners be aware of what some of the most common defects in cars are. Then, regularly maintain your vehicle to ensure all parts are functioning properly.

It may also be a good idea to frequently check to make sure your vehicle is not currently under recall. You can do so by visiting safercar.gov and entering your vehicle’s VIN number. The database will then provide you with a current list of any recalls that are affecting your vehicle.

We hope this information helps to keep you and your loved ones safe on the road!
