New Study Reveals that High School Athletes May Sustain Serious Brain Trauma after Just One Season of Football

A recent study conducted on high school football players in North Carolina revealed some disturbing information about the high frequency of Traumatic Brain Injuries in youth sports.

During the study, players were outfitted with special helmets that took MRI scans measuring the magnitude, direction and location of every hit to the head they sustained over the course of an entire football season. The MRI scans were compared to baseline readings collected at the start of the season.

After evaluating the scans, researchers discovered that the players’ brains had changed significantly on both a “structural and functional” level following one full season of football. The players’ brains exhibited troubling abnormalities at the end of the season that were not present in their initial scans.

Researchers are quick to point out that much more information must be gathered on head injuries in youth sports before they can reach any conclusions. For example, researchers were quoted saying that “it is difficult to know the long-term effects of these changes” and “we don’t know if…the off-season time allows the brain to return to normal.”

Concussions and brain injuries can have lifelong consequences. We are just scratching the surface of fully understanding the long-term effects of these injuries and how they can be treated. For parents, coaches, referees, and anyone else involved in youth spots, it is critically important to be able to recognize the symptoms of a concussion or head injury quickly so that a player can be immediately removed from the game.
