NC Nursing Home Under State and Federal Investigation

A nursing home in North Raleigh, North Carolina—once the subject of both state and federal investigations—now finds itself under additional scrutiny following allegations of elder abuse and patient neglect. A detailed article on the allegations—which includes disturbing video footage—is available here.

Universal Healthcare—located on Clarks Fork Drive in North Raleigh—faced allegations of abuse and neglect last year. Federal and state authorities later substantiated those allegations, which were also the subject of a television news investigation. That investigation—bolstered by damaging hidden-camera footage—prompted the facility to make staffing changes, schedule additional training, and promise other administrative improvements.

Additional Investigations

Recently, new allegations of abuse and neglect have arisen—the latest in a history of violations at several facilities across North Carolina operated by Universal Healthcare. In one troubling instance, a wheelchair-bound diabetic amputee who required constant care was sent home with no support or care plan after she was unable to pay her outstanding bill. Other claims surround the deaths of two residents who were both reported to have fallen—as well as several reports of residents presenting unexplained bruising.

Federal Consequences

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) threatened to remove the facility from the Medicare program if violations were not addressed. CMS has also levied daily fines against the facility for other ongoing problems. A spokesperson for CMS indicates the agency is still investigating the facility and will share the results once the investigation is complete. A spokesperson for the North Carolina State Department of Health and Human Services added residents were not in immediate jeopardy at the beginning of their latest investigation.
