Riding a motorcycle or moped offers a rider little protection in the event of an accident. That’s why having insurance is so important. Motorcyclists have always been required to carry such coverage. For many years though, those on less powerful bikes like mopeds didn’t need to have insurance.
The North Carolina motorcycle accident lawyers at HensonFuerst explain that those rules have changed, and new regulations are in effect that require moped riders to be insured. The new regulations follow changes made last year that mandate all North Carolina mopeds be registered with the state.
According to WRAL News, lawmakers approved House Bill 148 in June. It calls for all North Carolina moped drivers to carry at least a $30,000 insurance policy to cover death or injury of one person in the event of an accident. The policy must also provide up to $60,000 of coverage if two people are injured or killed and $25,000 to cover costs of property damage.
Insurance claims can be complicated, and it may be difficult to determine the right steps to take after an accident.
