OMNI Artificial Hip Replacement System Susceptible to Failure

According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, each year approximately 400,000 people undergo total hip replacement surgeries. While a hip replacement is intended to increase a patient’s mobility and quality of life, unfortunately, that is not always the case.

In some instances, hip implants such as the OMNI (K2 or Apex K2) artificial hip replacement system can fail prematurely, causing internal tissue damage or other conditions such as metallosis.

Metallosis, which is the deposition and build-up of metal debris in the soft tissues of the body, occurs when pieces of metal wear off and enter into the bloodstream. Metal-on-metal hip systems, such as the K2 or Apex K2 artificial hip replacements, have been found to cause bone fractures near the joint, which can loosen or move the joint causing metallosis.

Conditions Related to OMNI Defective Hip Replacement Systems

Metallosis can cause many conditions, including:

  • Kidney damage
  • Skin rashes
  • Inflammation at the joint site
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Neurological issues
  • Thyroid issues
  • Mood/cognitive impairment

Although any surgical procedure or implantation carries with it its own set of risks, those associated with metal hip implants have been found to be more prevalent. Those who have experienced any of the following symptoms may require revision surgery and implant removal:

  • Audible popping from the implant
  • Grinding sounds coming from the implant
  • Loss of cognitive function
  • Beginning of heart conditions, such as cardiomyopathy
  • Sudden vision or hearing changes
  • Development of infections at the joint
  • Thyroid problems, which have not previously been diagnosed

If you have experienced any of these symptoms, it is important to consult with your doctor to determine what should be done.
