Symptoms of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome almost always begins with the patient experiencing a painful skin irritation and flu-like symptoms, such as fever, fatigue, cough and sore mouth and throat. As the disease continues to progress, patients may experience the following symptoms:
- Rash, blisters and red spots on the skin
- Fever
- Blisters in the eyes, mouth, ears, nose and genital areas
- Flu-like symptoms, including headache, nausea, fatigue and cough
- Shedding of skin
In its most severe cases, SJS is referred to as Toxic Epidermal Necrosis (TEN). Many patients that experience severe SJS/TEN suffer long-term health effects and permanent medical conditions such as:
- Scarring and permanent skin damage
- Blindness
- Cellulitis
- Blood Infection, or sepsis
- Death
Causes of SJS
SJS and TEN are often caused by adverse reactions to drugs and medications. If you or a loved one experienced SJS as the result of a drug reaction, you must avoid using that drug for the rest of your life. It is also recommended that all family members avoid that drug as well, as SJS is believed to be linked to certain genetic traits.
According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, the drugs most commonly associated with Stevens-Johnson include:
- Sulfonamides: used to treat infections
- Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): common pain relievers such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen.
- Antimalarials: used to treat and prevent Malaria
- Anticonvulsants: used to treat seizures
- Allopurinol: used to treat gout
SJS can also be caused by infections such as Herpes, Pneumonia, HIV or Hepatitis.
