High Rate of Fatal Workplace Injuries Among Hispanic Workers in North Carolina

In North Carolina, new studies show Hispanic workers suffer fatal work-related injuries at a disproportionate rate to other ethnicities. These findings are consistent with an overall national trend. A detailed report on these findings is available here.

Even though North Carolina had the tenth-lowest rate of workplace fatalities in 2017, Hispanic workers suffered fatalities related to workplace injuries at an alarming rate—the highest among all foreign-born workers.

Safety BLR—a website dedicated to workplace safety and compliance training—says the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) reports fatalities among workers who identify as Hispanic or Latino were persistently higher than other racial or ethnic groups. This follows a general increase in fatalities reported since 2013.

A Significant Trend

According to the United Health Foundation’s 2017 America’s Heath Rankings report, North Carolina currently has the tenth-lowest rate of occupational fatalities among all states. In 2017, this amounted to 3.9 deaths per 100,000 workers in manufacturing, trade, transportation, construction, utilities, professional, and business service sectors.

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports Hispanic or Latino workers accounted for 19% of all fatal occupational injuries in 2015. Fatal injuries suffered by these workers were 12% higher (4.0 per 100,000) in 2015 than 2014 (3.7 per 100,000). Nearly half of all 2015 deaths in the agricultural sector were Hispanic workers.
