Local Birth Center Investigated After Infant Deaths

Following the deaths of three newborns between October 2017 and February 2018 at a natural childbirth center in Cary, the chain’s co-founder said she welcomes state regulation of such facilities—while adding that her facility is not to blame for the deaths. A detailed article on the investigation is available here.

Birth centers allow women to deliver children without induced labor or pain medication while assisted by certified nurse midwives. While there is no formal state regulation of birthing centers, the North Carolina Board of Nursing oversees the certified nurse midwives who work at such facilities.

Inspectors from the state Division of Health Service Regulation examined the Cary facility. They interviewed staff, read patient records, checked employee credentials, and examined the facility’s procedures. The investigation resulted in a 36-page report, citing:

  • Inadequate Medical Oversight
  • Insufficient Overnight Staffing
  • Inadequate Fetal Heart Monitoring
  • Lack of Orientation and Follow-Up
  • Improperly Stocked Equipment
  • Inconsistent Cleaning Policies

All told, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services spent two months reviewing the Cary facility before issuing its findings—which identified 16 areas of deficiency.

The birth of a child should be a joyous occasion that family members can remember fondly for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, every year thousands of families will experience the pain and devastation of a Birth Injury.
