In 2017, the State of North Carolina received 27,483 reports of abuse, neglect, or exploitation of elderly persons. Sadly, this estimate may be startlingly low. According to a 2013 report issued by the National Research Council, only 1 in 14 cases of elder abuse are ever reported to authorities.

According to the report, elder abuse typically falls into four categories, including:
- Physical Abuse: Inflicting physical pain or injury through mistreatment.
- Emotional Abuse: Making verbal threats, intimidation, or other harassment.
- Financial Abuse: Intentional taking, withholding, or misuse of an elder’s funds.
- Physical Neglect: Not attending to an elder’s physical or biological needs.
Shining a Light on Elder Abuse
On May 11th, 2018; North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper signed a proclamation which designates the period between May 13th, 2018 (Mother’s Day) and June 17th, 2018 (Father’s Day) to be “Vulnerable Adult and Elder Abuse Awareness Month.”
With his declaration, the Governor hopes to enhance the focus placed on one of the state’s most vulnerable populations—and the alarming rate at which our elderly suffer abuse or neglect.
