Often times an injured worker will be asked to sign FMLA paperwork. A question that often arises is what benefits does the FMLA provide. The Family Medical and Leave Act (FMLA) was enacted to prevent an employer from terminating an employee for a certain period of time while they are out of work for a medical reason. Many people are under the impression that the FMLA provides certain benefits or operates as an entitlement program. This is simply not the case. FMLA simply prevents an employer from terminating an employee for a certain period of time while they are out of work for an injury related reason. It provides nothing more and nothing less.
