About the List
Senators Bob Casey and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania released a list provided by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)—the agency that oversees those nursing homes and long-term-care facilities which receive federal funding. The list contained nearly 400 facilities across the nation with a “persistent record of poor care.”
Focus on Problem Facilities
According to an additional news source, all facilities on the list—including ten in North Carolina—are eligible for the CMS Special Focus Facility (SFF) program. The SFF program publicly discloses the names of some 80 nursing homes investigators frequently visit to resolve documented issues. The full list of those troubled facilities is available here.
The Real Numbers
Currently, CMS estimates approximately 1.3 million Americans are residents of the country’s 15,600 nursing home facilities. In April 2019, CMS identified roughly three percent of those facilities as having problems. Facilities that do not improve run the risk of having their sources of Medicare and Medicaid funding cut off.
In 2010, there was room for 167 nursing homes in the SFF program—and 835 candidates. Cuts to the federal budget made in 2014 limit the number of facilities CMS can add to the SFF program. There are now 88 available slots—and as many as 440 candidates.
