After receiving numerous patient complaints, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services held a 3-day investigation at Blue Ridge Surgical Center in Raleigh. The investigation uncovered serious service failures including performing incorrect surgeries on patients.
One patient needed surgery on his left knee, and the operating room was set to perform the procedure on his right knee. Another patient was injected with an expired lens during eye surgery. A young boy needed mouth surgery and his surgery was performed at the wrong site.
Over the 3-day investigation, a 36-page detailed report was compiled showing that Blue Ridge Surgical Center, which runs eight operating rooms, had systemic service failures throughout their organization.
