You just heard that a good friend has been injured in a car accident. You want to help but aren’t sure what you can do. Unfortunately, you can’t take their pain away or even speed along their recovery. However, there are a few things you can do that may make the next several weeks or months much easier.
- Support the support—The injured isn’t the only person going through a hard time. The family members supporting that individual may be feeling an even greater strain. Find ways to support the family as they provide support to the injured. For instance, bring a prepared meal or offer to take their kids to and from school. Little things like that may make a big difference.
- Give practical gifts—Your friend may be out of work for a while. If you’re going to give him/her a gift, consider something practical, such as a gas card or gift card to their local grocery store. Flowers are great, but they won’t feed the family after a missed paycheck.
- Be an encourager—The road to recovery is long. Keep in touch throughout the process and offer a word of encouragement when you can. Simply being around and positive can go a long way.
- Recommend an attorney—The leading cause of bankruptcy is medical bills. The insurance company should pay them, but that doesn’t mean they will. For that reason, it’s always a good idea to speak with an attorney following a serious accident. Many firms offer free consultations, so there’s no risk in having the conversation. Do some research and make a recommendation that you feel comfortable with. For your friend, it could be the difference between a brief setback and a lifetime of debt.
