Type 2 Diabetes is a serious medical condition that impacts millions of Americans. Data indicates that the prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes is on the rise nationwide, forcing many patients to take prescription medications to help manage their symptoms.
Unfortunately, several medications used to treat Type 2 Diabetes have been linked to an increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
The drugs being reviewed for a link to pancreatic cancer are known as incretin memetics. These drugs are more commonly known by their brand names, which include:
- Onglyza®
- Byetta®
- Januvia®
- Janumet®
- Tradjenta®
- Victoza®
- And others
If you or a loved one took any of the above medications and developed pancreatic cancer as a result, you may be entitled to compensation. Call Henson Fuerst today or fill out a free consultation form online to learn how our North Carolina Drug Injury attorneys may be able to help.
Diabetes Drugs Linked to Pancreatic Cancer
In 2013, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a Drug Safety Communication announcing that they were investigating the link between the use of incretin mimetic medications such as Januvia®, Onglyza® and others, and the development of pancreatic cancer.
Additional, more recent studies found a strong link between an increased risk of pancreatic cancer and several drugs in the incretin mimetic classification. One drug that has come under particularly strong scrutiny is sitagliptin, better known by its brand names Januvia®, Janumet®, Janumet XR® and Juvisync®.
A 2016 study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information concluded that sitagliptin is “significantly associated with a higher risk of pancreatic cancer.”
Diabetes drugs like Januvia® are extremely popular among patients with Type 2 diabetes. Thousands of people may be at risk of developing severe, or even fatal, medical conditions cause by the use of these dangerous drugs.
