The Bicycle Helmet: A Century of Innovation

For well over a century, the bicycle has offered an enjoyable, healthy way to travel for millions of Americans. Unfortunately, cyclists also face a serious risk of injury. In 2015 alone, nearly 467,000 cyclists suffered crash-related injuries.

With safety in mind, Henson Fuerst has prepared an informative infographic which outlines the evolution of this essential piece of equipment. Our illustrated guide highlights advancements in helmet safety—and how helmets can help lower the risk of traumatic brain injury for riders.

Know the Risk… and the Law;

A joint academic study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Virginia Tech states 835 bicyclists died in collisions with motor vehicles in 2016—the highest number killed since 1991. The study notes less than half of those killed wore helmets.

Wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle is just as important as wearing a seat belt when you’re in a car. When worn properly, a correctly rated helmet can lower the risk of head injury by 85% and prevent 60% of head injury deaths. That is why anyone under 16 years old is required to wear a bike helmet in North Carolina.
